Bhimgarh Fort Reasi:

Bhimgarh Fort, generally known as the Reasi Fort, near Reasi, a town approximately 64 km north-west of Jammu. The Fort is located on a hillock approx 150 metres high. Initially the Fort was constructed of clay and later on one of the heirs of Maharaj Rishipal Rana, the founder of Reasi, reconstructed it using stone. It was used by the royal family members for taking shelter during emergencies. Reasi Fort or Bhimgarh Fort, built  a top 150 meters hillock, stands out as an important landmark of Reasi town in Jammu and Kashmir History tells that it was initially a mud fort, which was later reconstructed with stone masonry by Maharaja Rishipal Rana and was generally used by the royal family to take shelter during emergencies.

The repairing of the Fort was started in 1817 and it was finished in 1841. The repairing task was carried by the King Gulab Singh of Jammu. It has also an important landmark associated with the gallant career of the legendary Dogra warrior General Zorawar Singh.The majestic fort has a big wooden gate with images of Lord Ganesha and Maha Kali carved in separate niches inside the wall at the entrance. The gate is made up of Baluka stones with Rajasthani carvings. Statues of Lord Mahakali and Hanuman are also there. Until 1988, this beautiful fort was in sturdy condition and but get renovated when it was taken under the jurisdiction of Archeological Survey of India in 1989. It was renovated in 1990 by Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The façade and surrounding areas of the fort were given facelift with the construction of picturesque gardens and pathways. This new addition has added to the charm of this place of historical significance.

The main entry gate of the Bhimgarh Fort is constructed by Baluka stones. This stone is engraved with Rajasthani carving. This gaint gate is 50 metres long and one metre wide. Inside the fort, one can find a statue of the Goddess Mahakali and of God Hanuman. There is a temple, a pond and a number of rooms in this fort. In 1989, this magnificent fort was handed over to the Jammu & Kashmir State Archaelogy Department. The

Later, Bhimgarh Fort was again renovated under the supervision of the Vaishno Devi Sthapana Board Committee in 1990.The façade and surrounding extensions of Bhimgarh Fort were revived and restored with the addition of beautiful meandering pathways and lush gardens to support its exterior beauty. After enduring a number of earthquakes in the past, this fort is formidable enough to support its own structure despite the lack of maintenance after its facelift.

Bhimgarh Fort is opened to public visits and is soon becoming one of the most visited, top, and attractive tourist Heritage Destinations in Jammu. It majestically and quietly stands amidst utmost serenity and scenic expansions and is considered as one of the most significant landmarks of the State of Jammu & Kashmir .
